Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 - Travel to Kilimanjaro International Airport from JRO/Arusha.
After clearing customs, immigration, and baggage claim, proceed to the Kili-Base Hotel for an overnight stay based on bed and breakfast. We will get together in the evening for a gear check and pre-climbing briefing. We will also verify that you have the necessary travel insurance and medical coverage.
Day 2 - Rongai One Camp to Moshi
Following breakfast, you will be taken to the Marangu National Park Gate to finish the registration requirements and then be taken to the Rongai starting site. Beginning at Nale Moru (6,400 feet), the ascent follows a narrow trail that winds past potato and maize fields before entering a pine forest. After there, the track begins a steady but gentle rise through a lovely forest that is home to a variety of animals, including Colobus Monkeys. These monkeys have a flowing white tail and a black "cape" of white hair. Next, as we reach Rongai One campground, our first campground, we enjoy the vast views over the plains of Kenya (8,500ft). Walking takes three to four hours.
Day 3 - Rongai One Camp to Rongai Second Cave
The morning stroll after breakfast is a leisurely ascent up to the Second Cave (11,300), from which you can enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo and the eastern icefields on the crater rim. Following lunch, we veer off the main track and follow a smaller path southeast across the moorland, heading towards the rugged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campground is close to the 11,800-foot Kikelelwa Caves in a secluded valley adorned with giant sequoias. It requires roughly 6-7 hours.
Day 4 - Tarn Hut to Rongai Second Cave
You're rewarded with amazing vistas in all directions and a real sense of wilderness after a short but hard ascent. Shortly after leaving the vegetation behind, we arrive at the next camp, Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,200 feet), which is magnificently positioned in a cirque just below Mawenzi's towering spires. In order to help with acclimatization, you are welcome to use the afternoon to relax or tour the neighborhood. Walking takes three to four hours.
Day 5 - Kibo Hut to Mawenzi Tarn Hut
From Mawenzi to Kibo, we traverse the lunar desert of the saddle to arrive to Kibo Hut (15,400 feet), which is situated at the base of the crater wall. The day's reminder is spent sleeping in anticipation of the last ascent, which takes place early in the morning. Walking takes around five to six hours.
Day 6 - Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut
Around 1:00 am, we begin the hardest and last section of the climb by torchlight. To get to the crater rim at Gillman's Point (18,600 feet), we travel slowly across loose volcanic scree on a switchback track in the pitch dark. Here, we take a brief break to see the breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. For those in good shape, a three-hour round-trip journey to Uhuru Peak (19,345 feet) will take them to the breathtaking glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy the majority of the summit area. After stopping for refreshments, we descend surprisingly quickly to Kibo Hut (15,400 feet) and then on to Horombo Hut (12,200 feet). Walking takes approximately 11–15 hours.
Day 7 - Return to Arusha via the Marangu Park Gate
Following breakfast, a gentle ascent leads you to Mandara Hut (8,900 feet) over moorlands. Next, we follow an excellent path through a magnificent, green forest until we reach the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Marangu, which is at an elevation of 6,000 feet. From there, we are taken to the Kili-Base Hotel, where we spend the night on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 8 - Transfer of Departure
Our transfer service will bring you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure if your trip to Africa concludes today. We will be ready to assist you in smoothly transitioning from your climb into your next Tanzanian adventure, whether you have reserved a safari with us or a few days to disappear into the immaculate sandy beaches and tropical waters of Zanzibar.
